Organizational Purpose

Rural Futures Collaborative, Inc. (“Rural Futures”) is being organized as a nonprofit educational organization focused on entrepreneurship education, collaborative learning, technology education, professional development, and community-centered educational programming within rural communities.
The organization was developed in response to recurring requests from participants in entrepreneurship and technology courses taught through the Lower Richland Tech Academy, a state-funded and locally administered educational initiative serving Lower Richland County, South Carolina. Several founders and volunteers of Rural Futures served as volunteer instructors within those programs.
At the conclusion of multiple instructional cohorts, participants consistently requested continued access to mentorship, peer collaboration, networking opportunities, and ongoing educational support after formal coursework concluded. Participants repeatedly expressed that while classroom instruction was valuable, they lacked access to environments where they could continue developing ideas, receiving feedback, collaborating with peers, and maintaining momentum.
The founders observed that many rural participants lacked access to collaborative professional environments commonly available in urban areas, including entrepreneurial ecosystems, coworking environments, mentorship networks, and recurring professional learning communities.
After researching entrepreneurial ecosystem models and collaborative learning environments, the founders found that their observations aligned with research associated with Daniel Isenberg of Babson College and later ecosystem researchers including Ben Spigel and Erik Stam. This research identified that entrepreneurship outcomes improve when participants have recurring access to mentorship, collaborative environments, peer interaction, educational programming, and professional support systems. Research
also identified that these support structures are frequently less developed or less accessible in rural communities.
Rural Futures was therefore created to provide collaborative educational environments specifically designed for rural communities. The organization’s activities are educational in nature and are designed to provide entrepreneurship and technology education, support collaborative learning and mentorship, create recurring educational engagement, increase access to professional and educational resources, and strengthen long-term educational ecosystems within rural communities.
The organization anticipates that a substantial portion of its total support will be derived from contributions, grants, and public support, consistent with its classification as a public charity.
